Nehemiah Part 21: The Enemies of God Never Stop Talking

By Dr. Terry Jones - Posted on 30 March 2010

Now Tobiah the Ammonite was near him and he said, "Even what they are building--if a fox should jump on it, he would break their stone wall down!" Nehemiah 4:3

Now they go farther. The enemies of God never stop talking. Show me someone who talks a lot and I will show you someone who is in trouble. Talking a lot is one of the worst things you can do. Maybe smoking cigarettes is worse. But actually not, it is not. Running off at the mouth is one of the worst things you can do. Sooner or later you are going to get into trouble. Sooner or later you are going to run out of things to talk about, and you are going to start talking about other people, because you can only talk about yourself so long. Sooner or later you run out of stuff to talk about, so you talk about somebody else.

Here in verse 3 he says even if they are going to do it, it’s not going to be any good. Even if they do it, even if they build the wall, look at what they are building with. Stones, burned stones and rubble, even if they build it, it’s just going to fall down. It is not really going to last.

What did Nehemiah do when he heard that? How do you act when people insult the Kingdom of God? They are insulting here! They are saying Nehemiah, all of his effort, all of the hard work, all of the people there, they are just building garbage. It is a bad, weak wall, that even if a fox should jump on it, it will fall down. What do you do when people insult the leadership? Insult the work? Insult the efforts of the work? What is your reaction?

Nehemiah got mad. Do you know why? Because it was personal. You see, we don’t get mad because the church is not personal. Because we actually agree with those accusations. Not personal. But he got upset. Now look at what Nehemiah did.

Now I want to look at something really, really serious, the seriousness of coming against the Kingdom of God. Let’s be more exact. The seriousness of coming against Nehemiah, the men, women of God. Nehemiah was a person. He was not Jesus, he was not perfect, he did not do everything right, but he was the called and the anointed of God. In verse 4 Nehemiah cries out to God. Nehemiah is not happy. Nehemiah is angry because they have insulted the work. They have insulted Dove, they have insulted the leadership.
